Overview

Students will learn about the opening of the Canadian West, modes of transportation, the immigrant experience, and the history of Canada, by examining primary-source material. You may wish to adapt the suggested activities to your specific class and/or curriculum needs.

Learning Objectives

These activities will help your students to

• identify various aspects of the pioneer experience: economics, transportation, geography, social history;
• gain an understanding of the challenges and hardships of life as a pioneer;
• make connections between historical events such as settling the West, and the coming of the railway, and how these events shaped Canada as we know it today;
• communicate ideas, interpret information and identify various viewpoints using a variety of primary-source materials (including advertising);
• demonstrate reasoning and critical thinking, cooperative learning and research skills and learn practical applications of mathematical skills.
