Preface

Information on a wide range of Canadian income security and social services programs is maintained by Social Development Canada in support of the development of policies and programs in the social security field.

This report provides annual data on expenditures and, in most instances, on beneficiaries for a comprehensive set of income security and social services programs in Canada by province, over the 25-year period 1978-79 to 2002-03. Health and education expenditures are included to arrive at a total for social security expenditures.

The data in this report have been drawn from a wide variety of sources. The assistance of the many federal and provincial departments and of other organizations which contributed to the report is very much appreciated.
