Digital Preservation in the Canadian Landscape

Library and Archives Canada is collaborating with both the Canadian Library Association (CLA) and the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) to present two pre-conference sessions, each a full-day workshop, on digital preservation.

The two sessions will explore the current Canadian situation regarding the preservation of valued digital information in Canada. The goals are to share information, to identify gaps and to build potential partnerships for further collaboration within Canada. The focus of presentations will be on the emerging digital preservation infrastructure in Canada, its established networks, its trusted digital repositories and on collaborations. Other presentations will be on individual Canadian projects: challenges, lessons learned, and proposed solutions. Each day will conclude with a panel summary and floor discussions addressing the gaps in the Canadian scene, what is needed to move forward and how do we get there?

Anyone with an interest in digital preservation is encouraged to attend. Both sessions are open to archivists, librarians, curators, digital collection managers, technologists, IM professionals and developers in the digital information domain.

The CLA session will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, in Edmonton, Alberta. The keynote speaker will be Martha Anderson, Director of Program Management of the (U.S.) National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program. The ACA session will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Francine Berman, Vice President for Research, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Co-chair of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access.
