Modernizing Textual Reprography Services at LAC

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce that it is modernizing its textual reprography services in order to meet growing client demand for digital copies. Therefore, as of November 15, 2010, LAC will now offer copies of various textual records in digital format.

Phase one of this initiative focuses on public domain documents as well as government records and private records for which release of reproductions will be permitted according to legislative, contractual and institutional obligations. Subsequent phases of the digital reprography initiative will expand to include requests such as records released through Access to Information and Privacy legislation.

Benefits for Clients

Clients will now have the option to download the requested files from our server or print the files themselves. They will no longer have to pay shipping fees. When the original exists in colour, clients will receive full-colour files instead of black-and-white photocopies.

As a result of this modernization initiative, LAC will add digitized images generated by client requests to its website, whenever permissible, thereby making a broader range of LAC holdings available to Canadians.

This initiative will enable LAC to considerably reduce the number of photocopies produced. Currently, LAC sends out over 750,000 photocopies annually.

Digital copies can be ordered online and from our National Capital Region location. In the future we plan to extend this service to the Regional Service Centres.
