Déjà Vu: 40 Years of Language and Laughter in Political Cartoons

Marking the 40th anniversary of the Official Languages Act, this exhibition of cartoons portrays with humour and mordant irony key events and passionate political debates that have shaped our relationship with official languages. Presented by the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, in cooperation with Library and Archives Canada.
A smaller version of the exhibit will travel across the country from September 2009 to May 2010.

"We were so far away..." The Inuit Experience of Residential Schools

The Legacy of Hope Foundation, in partnership with the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and Library and Archives Canada, has produced its second exhibition on residential schools. The exhibition uses the oral testimonies of eight Inuit Survivors to portray the collective Inuit experience of residential schools. Photographs from the personal collections of each Survivor and from nine Canadian church and public archives poignantly illustrate their collective and individual experiences.

Project Naming

Project Naming is a trilingual Web exhibition containing a searchable photographic database available in English, French and Inuktitut. The goal of this project is the identification of Inuit portrayed in some of the photographic collections of Library and Archives Canada (LAC). New information is added to the archival records of these historical photographs and made available in the database of the Project Naming Web exhibition.

Mexico: films and exhibition

To mark the 199th anniversary of Mexican independence, the Mexican Embassy presents the films of Emilio Fernandez and an exhibition of works by Daniel Thomas Egerton. Some titles to be screened include Bugambilia, Las Abandonadas, Flor Silvestre, Pueblerina and La Perla. These films were directed by one of Mexico’s greatest directors Emilio “El Indio” Fernandez. Various lithographs by Daniel Thomas Egerton will be on display. His work depicts lush scenes from nature and prosperous villages inhabited by people in traditional costumes.
The films are in Spanish with English subtitles.

This talk is presented by Brian Glenn as part of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa series. It is about Mr. Glenn’s search for his maternal grandfather, a search he first explored at a Great Moment talk in 2004. As subscription and pay-per-view websites expanded their databases over the years, more information on the Glenn family history and immigration to Canada emerged. But even with the help of these Internet technologies, Mr. Glenn is not any closer to succeeding in his quest.

The Free Thinking Film Society of Ottawa is pleased to present a lecture by Bruce Bawer, an American author and leading cultural critic currently residing in Oslo, Norway. He has written two books on Islam and his latest work Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom is receiving high praise. The lecture concludes with a brief question and answer session followed by a reception with the author. All attendees will receive a free DVD of the movie Obsession.

Seaside Attractions: Ancient Lighthouses in the Mediterranean World

Renée A. Bouchard, a Ph.D. candidate in the History Department of the University of Montreal, will present a lecture based on her thesis research of ancient lighthouses of the Mediterranean from the Bronze Age to the time of the Roman Empire. Ms. Bouchard is a practising archaeological artist whose interests include ancient lighthouses, charioteers in Ancient Greece and ancient glass.
The Ottawa Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and the Canadian Institute of Mediterranean Studies will co-sponsor this event.

International Polar Year Film Festival

Celebrate the International Polar Year (IPY) and explore the world of science and research in the Arctic. The IPY is the largest international program of scientific research focused on the polar regions. It has brought together nations from around the world to shed light on some of the most pressing issues we face, such as climate change and the health and well-being of Northern peoples. The IPY Film Festival includes a range of films from educational works (documentaries, industrial films) to fiction films. After the screenings, filmmakers and researchers will discuss their films and answer questions. Photos and posters will be on display in the lobby.
Tickets are free and are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Canadian Film Institute by calling 613-232-6727. The Film Festival is funded through the Government of Canada Program for the IPY.
