LIFE DATES: 1868 01 09-1950 04 12.
BIRTHPLACE: Lucknow, ON.
PLACE OF DEATH: San Gabriel, CA.
WHERE ACTIVE: Edmonton, AB; Vancouver, BC.
BUSINESS ADDRESS/YEAR:
WORK INTERVAL: 1892 03 12-1921.
STATUS: Commercial.
SUMMARY: C.W. Mathers began his photographic career with the Edmonton branch studio of the Calgary photographic partnership of Boorne & May. According to Alberta photohistorian Brock Silversides, Mathers was Edmonton's only photographer for several years, including the first two years of the Klondike Gold Rush. Mathers never ventured beyond Athabasca Landing, about 100 miles north of Edmonton, during those two crucial years. He photographed many Klondikers, including the first woman to leave Edmonton for the Yukon, Mrs. G.E. (Nellie) Garner of Fresno, California (the J.S. Mack or Fresno Party). It was her portrait taken in the Mathers studio that helped James Michener shape his novel of the gold rush Journey (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1988). In 1901, three years after photographing stampeders departing by boat from Athabasca Landing, Mathers made his own epic journey of discovery along the same rivers followed by some of the Edmonton goldseekers. In the company of a Hudson's Bay Company trader he reached Fort MacPherson on the Peel River, not far as the crow flies from Dawson, and was able to take the first professional photographs of Inuit in the region.
Mathers sold his business in 1904 to Ernest Brown and moved to Vancouver, BC, where he practiced photography sporadically while attempting to collect from Brown on the payment for his business. In 1920 Mathers moved to Taft, California, where he worked briefly as a photographer and then retired to Gardena.
COLLECTIONS/FORMATS: Provincial Archives of Alberta (negatives).
IDENTIFYING MARKS: Print surface usually captioned and signed "Photo by Mathers Edmonton" or "Mathers" or "Photo by C.W. Mathers, Edmonton Alta" or "Mathers Vancouver B.C." Ernest Brown retitled and claimed credit for many of Mathers' photographs after Mathers left Edmonton for Vancouver. Sometimes, however, Brown left Mathers' name on the negative.

WORK INTERVAL: 1862?-1912.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Married in 1852 to Richard Maynard, she emigrated to the Colony of Vancouver Island with her family in 1862. Although no direct evidence has been located, it is believed she opened Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery the same year. Primarily a portrait photographer, she boasted upon her retirement in 1912 of having photographed just about everyone who passed through Victoria. She and Richard made a few trips together (dates and destinations of these trips together are 1875 [San Francisco], 1879 [Vancouver Island pleasure cruise], 1887 and/or 1889 [Banff], 1888 [Queen Charlotte Islands]). Both practiced landscape photography; it is not always clear, though their work was marketed under separate imprints, exactly who took which photographs. Hannah also experimented with novelty techniques such as photosculpture (persons made to resemble statues), multiple exposure tricks, and composite imagery. Her probate, executed by her son Albert, says she disposed of her equipment about 1910 to a Chinese photographer named Peter on Government St.
Victoria playwright Janet Munsil's play Be Still about Hannah Maynard premiered at Richmond's Gateway Theatre on March 1, 2001 and opened at Victoria's Belfry Theatre on March 14, 2001.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Married in 1852 to Hannah Hatherly, he gave up bootmaking in Bowmanville to mine gold in the Fraser River in 1858-59. Returning to Canada (Ontario) for his family, they sailed via San Francisco on the Sierra Nevada, the same boat which brought F.G. Claudet back to Victoria in March 1862. Richard left his family again that June for the Stikine Territory and the gold fields there. He is reputed to have made a fortune and came back to Victoria where he settled down as a boot and shoe maker and photographer. The earliest known reference to his photography is a panorama he made of Victoria harbour in May 1864. His first trip outside Victoria occurred in 1868 when he took his son Albert to Barkerville. He accompanied Indian Affairs commissioner Dr. I.W. Powell in 1873 on an inspection tour along the east coast of Vancouver Island and the northwest coast of the mainland. The next year found Maynard on another trip with Powell, this time around Vancouver Island. Fog and rain prevented Richard from taking many photographs. Another important trip was made with Captain Newton H. Chittenden to the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1884. He and Hannah returned to the Queen Charlottes in 1888. Maynard sailed to the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea to photograph the seal rookeries in 1892. Richard also made trips to Alaska for photographic purposes in 1879, 1882, and 1887.
