Bank notes offer an interesting perspective on our culture, history, and values and are a popular collectable. The Bank of Canada's Currency Museum provides helpful information to anyone wanting to learn more about collecting bank notes and other forms of currency.
In November 1999, the Bank of Canada auctioned off surplus bank note material to collectors. A subsequent auction was held in November 2000. In the 1999 auction, specimen bank notes of earlier series and low-serial-number notes from the 1969-1979 series were offered. In 2000, complete sets of specimen notes and low-serial-number notes from the 1986-1991 Birds of Canada series were offered.
These auctions generated considerable interest among collectors and the general public, and lots sold well above their expected values.
