About the records
The year 2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, which took place from June 18, 1812, to February 16, 1815. During this period of conflict between the United States and Great Britain, many military events occurred on Canadian soil. To learn more about the War of 1812, we invite you to read the historical overview.
Library and Archives Canada holds a vast and unique collection of records related to the Canadian men and women who were involved in the War of 1812. It consists mainly of muster rolls, paylists, claims, certificates of service, and medal registers. Please note that, except for the South African War, personnel records for the Canadian military were not created before the First World War
Militia units played an important role in the War of 1812. These units have existed in British North America and post-Confederation Canada for most of its history. They were formed from able-bodied men locally recruited to defend against invasion or rebellion, in support of British Regular Forces. Units were formed on a county basis, and unit officers were chosen from the local elite.
Library and Archives Canada holds nominal rolls and paylists of personnel who served in the militia of Lower Canada (Province of Quebec) during the War of 1812 (RG 9 1A7). Paylists contain the names of personnel, the periods for which they were paid and the amount of money they received. Nominal rolls sometimes contain such information as age, residence and date of enlistment. They are usually grouped by unit or county.
How the records are arranged on the microfilm reels
The microfilm reels have been digitized and the images appear in the same order as on the microfilm reels. You can browse through the images as you would through a microfilm reel. You can move through the images one by one, or skip ahead by entering a new page number in the page navigation box. The records are not searchable by name.

Please note that spelling variations of names were common before the mid-1900s. Many names were written phonetically, as they sounded to the person recording them.
