The Wives Speak
The party, the public, the media and the Ottawa social circle all require that the prime minister's wife play a demanding and often artificial role. Some wives have been able to take advantage of their position, however, to lend support to charitable causes. Only Agnes Macdonald and Margaret Trudeau have left any written record, other than letters, documenting the experience. Speaking, perhaps, for all the wives, Maryon Pearson once quipped that "Behind every successful man is a surprised woman." In the future, husbands of prime ministers will have to define their roles.
